1.) Area of a circle mini-quizzes

Circles Unit Mini-Quizzes – Circumference and Area FREEBIE

Two free quizzes from the circles mini quizzes unit. These quiz sheets are a half page and act perfectly as formative assessments or as a brief summative assessment. The quizzes target a single topic area at a time allowing you to quickly assess whether your students have gained a sufficient understanding in this area before progression to the next topic area.

The resource consists of:

  1. Finding the circumference and area of a circle when the diameter and radius are known.
  2. Calculating the area and circumference when the Pythagorean theorem or  trigonometry are required to calculate the diameter. This measurement can then be used to calculate the area and circumference of the circle.
  3. The two quizzes here are a sample from a larger collection of quizzes that includes:

1) Naming the different key features of a circle:

• Center: the single point which lies at the center of the circle.

• Diameter: any straight line that connects two points on the circumference and passes through the center. Any diameter you draw will be the same length.

• Radius: any straight line that connects the center to a point a on the circumference. Any radius you draw will be the same length.

• Circumference: the distance around the outside of the circle, i.e. the perimeter of the circle.

2) Classification of arcs
3) Calculating the length of an arc
4) Calculating the angle subtended in a circle
5) Calculation of inscribed angles
6) Chords
7) Intersection of secants inside a circle
8) Secants exterior to the circle
9) Tangents

All the resources are complete with their own answer key.

11.) Area of Circles Scavenger Hunt

Circle Area and Circumference Bingo! game

This is a fun activity that the students really get into by using bingo as a competitive game. There are questions on finding the area and circumference of circles; the resource also includes more complex compound shapes that include the area of circles calculations.

Using the included PowerPoint, the circles and compound shapes are displayed to your students with some measurements included. The problems are differentiated to suit a range of abilities, and the sequence of the questions can be changed to suit your class.

The bingo cards are included as a printable pdf sheet as part of this area and circumference of circles resource. There are enough bingo cards for classes of up to thirty-six students. If you would prefer not to print the questions can be projected from one slide and students can copy their selection of questions onto a grid in their workbooks.

How to play this circle area game:

If a question is displayed that they have the solution to then they cross it off their answer grid. The first student to achieve a complete set of answers to all the problems must call out bingo! I usually motivate my students by offering a small reward for the first student to achieve bingo.

I find this as a great way to involve students in a review activity and it is so much more fun than simply handing out a worksheet on circle areas!
